Here's where we could slip-up and use a bunch of technical jargon and acronyms but we will do our best to control ourselves. Basically, a database is a collection of data (funny how that name works) that is the backbone of a web application. For example, let's say you are looking to implement an e-commerce solution for your client... They will most certainly need a database to capture customer data (billing information, shipping information, purchases, etc.) and can later use this data to print reports, track inventory, send invoices, etc.

Essentially, a database gives your clients a tool with which to process and dissect critical business information.
